Battalion Advanced Technology Ltd is a UK-based company focused on advancing next-generation materials for dual-use applications.

The opportunity

Battalion is pursuing two fields that are important to modern defence and advanced industry: high-performance materials and interfaces for hypersonic and other extreme-temperature applications, and high-performance wide-bandgap semiconductors.

In both, the materials themselves are the limiting factor, and the technical barriers are high. Battalion jumps an enormous barrier to entry in equipment and knowledge by partnering with Penn State, a leading U.S. university for materials science, and is already using millions of pounds' worth of pre-existing, highly technical laboratory equipment.

How Battalion works

Battalion sponsors research at Penn State's Materials Research Institute under two three-year agreements. The research agreements provide the opportunity to acquire an exclusive licence on 100% of the developed intellectual property over the initial three-year sponsored research period. Value is created through patents, licensing and partnerships with civilian and national security objectives.

Private capital is blended with government, defence and industry support to improve the probability of commercialisation. Battalion already sees opportunities to expand the research sphere from the US to the UK through the military and academic contacts of the company.

Battalion's programmes are at the research stage. Patent applications are targeted over the agreement term; no patents have yet been granted and no device is yet in production.

In early August the programmes were kicked off with the principal investigators and their teams. Battalion is already using millions of pounds' worth of pre-existing, highly technical laboratory equipment.

In the Semiconductor Laboratory the team is able to create 2D materials literally one atom thick and investigate them at the atomic scale for the quality of the layers to be used in new forms of semiconductors.
